Professional Indemnity. Whether it's called Malpractice (sometimes Medical Malpractice), Professional Indemnity, Professional Liability or Errors and Omissions (E&O) this is a form of insurance that protects you against valid claims that you did something "professionally" wrong or incorrect. This would be something you did but shouldn't have done, or something you didn't do but should have. Anything from breach of contact to the claim that "I took your advice and this happened .....".

Public Liability. Professional indemnity is about claims of some sort of mistake in your professionalism. Public Liability covers you against claims that could have nothing whatsoever to do with your professionalism - just that the claim is made as a result of you being about your business - virtually anywhere. The Americans have an expression for this called "carpet trip". Very descriptive.

Loss of Documents. In business, for whatever reason, you may take your client papers for safekeeping. Should you loose them you could be open to a case of "loss of documents". Claims for this are limited to £5,000.

Products Liability. If in the course of business you sell or distribute products then you are covered for claims against you about the product.

Breach of Confidentiality. Cover against a claim that you breached a confidentiality with a client.

Libel & Slander. Cover against a claim that in some way you issued a libelous or slanderous statements either by word of mouth or the written word.

Infringement of Copyright. That you have infringed another person's copyright.

Defense costs: The costs of defending any of the above claims. It is not unknown for a claimant to be so emotionally "locked into" their complaint that they will not let it go (even if you believe it to be without any basis at all) and can take you to court. If that ever happens the defense costs can rise steeply and quickly. However flimsy you consider a claim to be almost any claim CAN go to court if the claimant is overbearing and determined enough. If that is the case it is important that you are properly represented because without proper representation you could loose the case, and not only have the award to pay but two sets of legal costs.
